Take an Active Approach
When the president of a company walks up to you and asks you, “Is the ‘Committee Report’ done?†the worst answer is “I don’t know.†It makes it look like you don’t care. This is what I just did thirty minutes ago. The president of my company came up and asked me that exact question and I looked up at her and said “I don’t know.†She frowned then walked away.
I did the exact opposite of what I should have done. I should have been active with my response. For example, I could have said, “I’m not sure, but I’ll ask Mark(my manager) as soon as he gets in.†Mark never let me know what was going on with the project, so I didn’t know what to say.
The report wasn’t my responsibility, but it didn’t matter to the president. She wanted to know that someone was willing to help.
If I would have taken an active approach she would have been pleased that I was willing to take care of the problem. Any active answer is better than showing somebody that you don’t care.
