Take an Active Approach

When the president of a company walks up to you and asks you, “Is the ‘Committee Report’ done?” the worst answer is “I don’t know.” It makes it look like you don’t care. This is what I just did thirty minutes ago. The president of my company came up and asked me that exact question and I looked up at her and said “I don’t know.” She frowned then walked away.

I did the exact opposite of what I should have done. I should have been active with my response. For example, I could have said, “I’m not sure, but I’ll ask Mark(my manager) as soon as he gets in.” Mark never let me know what was going on with the project, so I didn’t know what to say.

The report wasn’t my responsibility, but it didn’t matter to the president. She wanted to know that someone was willing to help.

If I would have taken an active approach she would have been pleased that I was willing to take care of the problem. Any active answer is better than showing somebody that you don’t care.
