Working happy has been a passion of mine for over ten years. I wasn’t able to figure out the combination until October 2007. The key that unlocked my door to working happy was easy to understand, but hard to apply. I worked in

  • Retail

  • Construction

  • Sales

  • Marketing

  • Teaching

  • Media buying

  • And owned my own business

 

But something was always missing. The closest that I ever got to working happy was my mushroom business. The mushrooms grew wild at the end of July and into the beginning of August. I scoured the hills looking for them, picking them and selling them to fine dining restaurants. It was exciting, fun, and a workout. I must have lost 10 pounds that year. The problem was making a career out of mushroom mongering. Unless you have green houses and a staff of growers there is no way to make a consistent profit throughout a whole year.

 

Over the next ten years I tried to capture that love of work, but I felt empty. My business degree was well rounded, a little too well rounded because it wasn’t opening the doors to jobs that interested me. At every job there was depression and contemplation. Maybe I just wasn’t seeing something that others could see. I took notes, switched jobs, and read books, but nothing worked.

 

I enjoyed my mushroom business because I enjoyed the process. That was the key to my work happiness - enjoying the process of my work. The problem was obvious, but hard to change. Then I realized that I wasn’t making the proper connections. I was looking for the pain instead of how to make it interesting.
